Photo Credit: http://evatt.labor.net.au/publications/papers/images/democracy.jpgThe most valuable part of this poem, to me, comes in the first verse, in which Hughes states that we will never achieve democracy through compromise and fear. Things will never be truly equal if the blacks let the whites level with them and give in to compromises such as "separate but equal." As time has passed, Hughes' proclamation proved to be 100% correct.
So, this is one of my favorite poets. And unfortunately, I found myself today saying, "This is not a Democracy". Ohh the irony. The one thing, I truly wish we had. I think we have reached democracy. Langston would be proud.
